SCHOLARSHIP

1st Annual Awards Ceremony Coverage >>

NOT EVERYONE IS AN “A” STUDENT. BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT COLLEGE DREAMS SHOULD BE DEFERRED.

The scholarship program was established to target high school seniors. In hopes of expanding the definition of ‘merit’ scholarship, MSM reaches beyond the “A” students to embrace, nurture and sponsor the “B” and “C” students. These students possess the ability to succeed, but may not have achieved top grades due to various economic and/or life challenges.

Why is MSM’s scholarship program so important? A recent poll conducted by the Peter D. Hart Association for the Los Angeles Times found that minorities who do not possess college-level degrees are far more likely to lack resources in several areas. They tend to lack medical insurance, they usually do not hold full time employment and their potential income level plateaus at $20,000 a year. These and other alarming facts are what prompted MSM to act with urgency in addressing these problems. Through our various programs, MSM wants to facilitate a chance for underserved populations to attain an improved lifestyle.

Education is one of the keys to that improved lifestyle. Our scholarships are one more key to obtaining that education.

Our scholarship program is under the leadership of Program Director Mary Stevenson. With 30 years experience working in undergraduate admissions at a major university, Mary has been involved in a variety of capacities with prospective applicants, parents and administrators.
Our scholarship team has observed numerous underrepresented students struggle with a variety of financial problems. Many of the struggles stem from a lack of monetary resources. Students may run out of financial aid and other financial resources before all books have been purchased for the semester. Though tuition and fees may be covered, many students have difficulty buying food, paying for utilities and transportation. Imagine the stress of trying to excel in class and prepare for exams when you don’t know where your next meal is coming from.

MSM’s scholarships can’t solve every problem, but they help provide needed resources that can sometimes make or break a student in those tough times. These students are intelligent and they have the potential to succeed. They just need additional financial support to succeed at their highest potential.
MSM is striving to help students meet their most basic needs. With a vision that these students can focus on what is most important, concentrating on school, we want to help them secure a brighter future. We welcome new partners in this effort.
